Haori Lace Singles

Haori is our first custom yarn! Spun-for, and designed-by, us. A lace weight single, it's a unique blend of superwash merino for excellent colour uptake, non-superwash Rambouillet for loft and grip, and honey-coloured tussah silk for character and just a hint of sheen. Light, crisp, and subtly rustic, with a touch of golden glow.

It takes its name from haori, the hip-length jacket worn over kimono for both warmth and understated elegance. We created this yarn with layering and versatility in mind. It’s delicate enough for lace shawls with beautiful drape and crisp definition, but also has enough character to hold to itself and full just enough to become one beautiful fabric when held doubled for colourwork, marling, or texture play.

It goes without saying that this pairs exquisitely with carry-along yarns like Furisode and Kosode. All this, and it’s soft enough for next-to-skin wear!  

Available in 50g and 20g skeins, the colour and texture possibilities are nearly boundless. 

Laceweight single: 3–4mm. (US 2-6)

Held double: 3.5–4.5mm. (US 4-7)

When worked alone as a laceweight: it can be worked anywhere from 28 to 36 sts =10cm depending on the application. 

When held double: 22–26 sts = 10cm 

As a carry-along, gauge varies depending on the paired base, but typically 20-24 sts = 10cm

Haori should be cared for as a non-superwash wool. Thanks to that non-superwash component, it is surprisingly hard wearing for a lace singles, but some fulling should be expected in high-friction areas of garments, such as underarms. 

Instead of frequent washing, air-out your garments to stretch out time between wash days. Consider spot washing between full baths and re-blocking.

• We recommend all our hand-dyed yarns be hand washed in an abundant tepid (not hot!) bath, with a maximum soak time of 30 minutes.
• Use your favourite gentle no-rinse wool wash with a generous splash of white vinegar or a heaping spoonful of citric acid°. (°see below)
• After soaking, lift your item out of the bath and gently roll-dry it in a towel, do not wring!
• Alternatively, tie your damp item TIGHTLY in a pillowcase or wash bag, and spin out in your washing machine’s spin cycle. Be sure your machine cycle does not rinse during this cycle!
• Lay your item flat to dry, pin if desired.
• Keep out of direct sunlight
• Do not store dirty

°Contrary to popular lore, this isn't to 'set' loose dye! Rather, this conditions the fibre cuticle of protein fibres. A bath with a low pH will make your finished object feel softer to the touch, and improve shine!
