Uchikake Sock is our luxe sock base, a sumptuous blend of extra-fine merino, yak, and mulberry silk. Soft and round with subtle sheen and beautiful drape.

Named after the uchikake, a richly embroidered silk kimono worn in Japanese wedding ceremonies, this yarn brings elegance to every stitch. It’s perfect for delicate accessories, elevated garments, or simply spoiling yourself with something that feels extraordinary in hand and on the skin. 

Exceptionally soft and plush in the hand. The yak fibre adds warmth and density, while the silk gives the finished fabric noticeable sheen. Yak is a short stapled fibre, comparable to cashmere, and with wear the fabric develops a soft halo. The hand is indulgent and fluid without being floppy. Next-to-neck soft. Best suited to flowing garments and luxurious accessories.

Available in both 100g and 20g weights, offering you the flexibility of purchasing smaller quantities. Perfect for adding touches of complimentary colours to your work, or a wide choice of colours for more experimental projects.

If working this alone a sock gauge on the tighter side is preferable: between 32-28 =10cm 

For more open knits, this can be worked acceptably as a sport: at around 28-24 sts =10cm 

Uchikake should be cared for as a delicate fabric, and made into garments with sufficient ease that they do not see heavy wear at common friction points. It will develop a very slight halo with wear, this is normal and not a fault. 

Instead of frequent washing, air-out your garments to stretch out time between wash days. Consider spot washing between full baths and re-blocking.

• We recommend all our hand-dyed yarns be hand washed in an abundant tepid (not hot!) bath, with a maximum soak time of 30 minutes.
• Use your favourite gentle no-rinse wool wash with a generous splash of white vinegar or a heaping spoonful of citric acid°. (°see below)
• After soaking, lift your item out of the bath and gently roll-dry it in a towel, do not wring!
• Alternatively, tie your damp item TIGHTLY in a pillowcase or wash bag, and spin out in your washing machine’s spin cycle. Be sure your machine cycle does not rinse during this cycle!
• Lay your item flat to dry, pin if desired.
• Keep out of direct sunlight
• Do not store dirty

°Contrary to popular lore, this isn't to 'set' loose dye! Rather, this conditions the fibre cuticle of protein fibres. A bath with a low pH will make your finished object feel softer to the touch, and improve shine!
