Mōfu Blown Aran is a puffed halo-blend of baby alpaca, fine merino, and recycled nylon in a unique blown construction that gives it an almost cloud-like weight and warmth.

Blown yarn is constructed by forcing air through the fibre bundle into a hollow-core net tube during spinning. The result in this yarn is exceptional loft and warmth relative to its weight. It compresses and springs back, wears light, and produces a fabric with a soft, pillowy hand that wears very warm for its weight.

Mōfu, fittingly, are thick, cosy blankets. This yarn is deceptively light and extraordinarily warm, with wonderful meterage for it's diameter! The blown structure creates a fabric with puff and a medium halo, perfect for cosy outerwear, big relaxed sweater dresses, tunics, of course, mōfu 毛布 😉.

5-7mm (US size 9-10.5)

We find this is best worked at the larger end of the gauge spec for aran yarn, to give the halo room to do its job!

As Aran:  16-14 sts= 10cm

As Bulky:  14 sts= 10cm

Mōfu should be cared for delicately, so the halo doesn’t become matted. It is best suited for garments that have plenty of ease so they won't see much friction.

Instead of frequent washing, air-out your garments to stretch out time between wash days. Consider spot washing between full baths and re-blocking.

  • We recommend all our hand-dyed yarns be hand washed in an abundant tepid (not hot!) bath, with a maximum soak time of 30 minutes.
  • Use your favourite gentle no-rinse wool wash with a generous splash of white vinegar or a heaping spoonful of citric acid°. (°see below)
  • After soaking, lift your item out of the bath and gently roll-dry it in a towel, do not wring!
  • Alternatively, tie your damp item TIGHTLY in a pillowcase or wash bag, and spin out in your washing machine’s spin cycle. Be sure your machine cycle does not rinse during this cycle!
  • Lay your item flat to dry, pin if desired.
  • Keep out of direct sunlight
  • Do not store dirty

°Contrary to popular lore, this isn't to 'set' loose dye! Rather, this conditions the fibre cuticle of protein fibres. A bath with a low pH will make your finished object feel softer to the touch, and improve shine!
